Golden Hour Maternity Sessions

There’s a reason “golden hour” is the holy grail for maternity photos. And when you pair it with the wide, open sands of Druridge Bay, the result is something unforgettable.

I met these two parents-to-be on a calm evening in Northumberland. We timed it for 60 minutes before sunset at low tide. Druridge Bay is perfect for this: miles of sand, shallow tidal pools for reflections, and dunes that give you privacy without a long walk.

Why golden hour works so well for maternity

•  The light flatters everyone: That warm, directional light wraps around the body and gives skin a natural glow. No harsh midday shadows.

•  Emotion comes easy: As the sun drops, people relax. The beach goes quiet. It’s easier to slow down, connect, and forget the camera is there.

•  The setting keeps it timeless: Soft blues, pale golds, and wet sand reflections mean we don’t need props. The focus stays on you and your bump.

Tips if you’re planning your own Druridge Bay session

1.  Timing is everything: The best light is 60–45 minutes before sunset. Check tide times too. Low tide gives us those glassy pools for reflections.

2.  What to wear: Neutrals win. Creams, whites, soft blues, and earth tones keep it timeless. Flowy dresses catch the breeze. Bare feet are always a good idea here.

3.  Bring layers: It can get breezy even on warm days. A knit cardigan for between shots keeps you comfy.

4.  Make it yours: The most powerful images are the simple ones: a hand on the bump, forehead kisses, quiet eye contact.

What to expect during the session:

We’ll walk, talk, and take it slow. I’ll guide you into poses that feel natural, but the best moments usually happen in between — laughing at the cold water on your feet, whispering about names, watching the sky change.

Sessions last about an hour. Druridge Bay holds a special place for so many North East families. If you’re expecting and want photos that feel calm, warm, and deeply you, golden hour here is hard to beat.
