Why Longer Family Photography Sessions Create More Natural Memories
The best family photographs don’t usually happen in the first five minutes.
Especially when there is a two-year-old involved.
When families book a session with me, my aim is not just to create beautiful images — it is to give children time to feel comfortable, explore, and simply be themselves.
This family session started slowly at home, where their little girl had time to get used to me and my camera. We played, chatted, and let her curiosity lead the way. There was no pressure to smile or sit still — just a gentle beginning where she could feel safe and relaxed.
From there, we moved outside into the garden and followed the little moments that make childhood so special.
Bubbles floating through the air.
Feeding the birds.
Watering the plants.
Tiny hands holding a slice of watermelon on a warm summer day.
The kind of everyday moments that parents often wish they could freeze forever.

We then continued our family photoshoot at South Shields beach, where there was even more space to explore.
We collected little rocks, played in the sand, splashed through puddles, and enjoyed all the freedom that comes with being by the sea. And, of course, we finished with ice cream — because every good beach adventure needs a sweet ending.
This is why I love longer family photography sessions. They allow children the time to warm up, relax, and forget that there is a camera nearby.
The most meaningful photographs often appear between the planned moments: A curious look. A little laugh. A parent’s hand reaching out. A child running freely towards the sea.
These are the memories you will want to remember years from now.

As a family photographer in Newcastle and the North East, I believe childhood should be photographed as it really feels — playful, messy, full of connection, and beautifully imperfect.
